CDL Training

Starting a new career can be exciting, but proper training is key to a successful journey. For those entering professional truck driving, obtaining CDL training is essential. CDL (Commercial Driver License) training not only fulfills federal requirements but equips new professional drivers with vital skills for their careers. This foundational training includes more than just vehicle operation—it covers regulations, equipment inspection, time management, and cargo security, all critical for a career focused on safety and reliability.

CDL Training

To become a professional truck driver, you must first acquire your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). A Class A CDL is the most common type of professional driver’s license for those working in the truck driving field. By attending truck driving school, you can sharpen your skills and ensure you are truly prepared to drive trucks as a professional.

Take the following steps to earn your CDL:

Find Truck Driving Schools: The first step is to attend a truck driving school. Doing so will help prepare you to get your Class A CDL driver’s license in a few weeks. Fill out this form to find the closest CDL training school to you.

Get Hands-On Experience: Gaining hands-on experience is one of the top things you must do to prepare for a career in truck driving and is offered by many truck driving schools.

Onboarding and Advancement: Once you earn your Class A CDL, Werner provides additional training and onboarding to teach more advanced techniques for the road ahead.

Truck Driving School

There are a wide variety of CDL schools that can help educate and train potential drivers on the knowledge and skills they need to earn a Class A CDL. On average, the training takes about four weeks. However, someone with zero experience should complete at least 180 hours of training.

Potential drivers should choose a school with a proven record and a mix of classroom, hands-on learning and in-truck practice to get the experience you need for success.

Training Timeline and Costs

The length of CDL training can vary, but typically, you’re looking at around four to six weeks of full-time commitment. The cost of CDL training varies depending on the school and the specific program. With Werner®, programs like Tuition Reimbursement can help offset the cost of training, making the process more financially manageable.

Finding the Right CDL Training

Werner works with CDL training schools nationwide and owns Roadmaster Drivers School, offering 23 locations and comprehensive training. Roadmaster’s late-model equipment and weekly start dates make it a top choice for aspiring drivers. Embark on your trucking career with confidence, starting with the right CDL training. The skills and knowledge gained will set the stage for a safe, successful and fulfilling journey in the transportation industry.

Class A CDL Qualifications

To obtain a Class A CDL, each driver must meet specific requirements.

  • Age: The minimum age to hold an interstate Class A CDL is 21 years old. In most jurisdictions, individuals can operate commercial motor vehicles in intrastate commerce at 18. Now, opportunities are available for people aged 18-20 to operate in interstate commerce under the SDAP Program.
  • Medical Examiner Certificate: As part of the CDL application process, individuals must pass a medical examination to ensure they meet the physical and medical standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Drug Testing: All commercial drivers are subject to various types of drug testing, including pre-employment, random, post-accident and suspicion-based testing. The transportation industry has a zero-tolerance policy on illicit drug use and alcohol abuse.
  • Motor Vehicle Record: Many training providers will review an applicant’s motor vehicle record to ensure they are eligible to obtain a CDL and are able to obtain employment within the transportation industry after completion. A history of serious traffic violations, such as DUI/DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, or using a commercial vehicle to commit a crime may prohibit individuals from obtaining CDL and/or gainful employment as commercial drivers.
