Class A CDL Qualifications

To obtain a Class A CDL, each driver must meet specific requirements.

• Age. The minimum age to hold an interstate Class A CDL is 21. In most jurisdictions, individuals can operate commercial motor vehicles in intrastate commerce at 18. Opportunities are also available for people aged 18–20 to operate in interstate commerce under the SDAP Program.
• Medical Examiner Certificate. As part of the CDL application process, individuals must pass a medical examination to ensure they meet the physical and medical standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
• Drug testing. All commercial drivers are subject to various types of drug testing, including pre-employment, random, post-accident and suspicion-based testing. The transportation industry has a zero-tolerance policy on illicit drug use and alcohol abuse.
• Motor vehicle record. Training providers review an applicant's motor vehicle record to confirm eligibility for a CDL and for employment within the transportation industry after completion. A history of serious traffic violations — DUI/DWI, leaving the scene of an accident or using a commercial vehicle to commit a crime — may prohibit individuals from obtaining a CDL or gainful employment as a commercial driver.
