Supporting Our Veterans

Aug 7, 2023 | Truck Drivers, Veteran

Supporting veterans and their families is an integral part of our culture at Werner, with 20 percent of our workforce having a military background. We integrate our commitment to those who served our country into everything we do, from programs to celebrations to financial support.

We show our support and as some would say, ‘walk the walk’ through our recruitment programs, associate resource groups (ARGs) and even nonprofit support, for example. These positive outcomes have translated to Werner’s position on a top employer for both military veterans and spouses.

Here are just a few ways we honor veterans and support those who are a part of the Werner team:

R.E.D. (Remember Everyone Deployed)
We are a proud sponsor of R.E.D., a nonprofit created to bring awareness to our deployed service members and their families. R.E.D. commits to bringing hope and a message to our deployed and their loved ones that we do not forget them.

Please consider supporting this cause by wearing R.E.D. every Friday until the last service member comes home!

Operation Freedom
Werner veteran associates lead the Operation Freedom Fleet program, focusing on military community initiatives and providing a centralized point of contact for military issues and assistance.

Our Operation Freedom Fleet encompasses everything we do to help veterans transition into their next career as successful Werner professional drivers, mechanics or office associates. We offer a variety of programs and support veterans as they start the next phase of their careers.

WEVets
WEVets is Werner’s associate resource group devoted to our veteran professional drivers and associates. However, any associate is welcome to join this group and show support.

WEVets helps veterans capitalize on networking opportunities, develop their careers, gain access to resources, and serve our local communities.

Military Skills Test Waiver
Transitioning to a civilian career can be challenging, but servicemembers have the advantage of developing excellent skills during their time serving. Because of that, we want to make it as easy as possible for experienced servicemembers to leverage that expertise up front.

For service members who are currently licensed and employed, or were employed within the past 12 months, with a military motor vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), the Military Skills Test Waiver allows servicemembers to apply for a Class A commercial driver license (CDL-A) by taking only the written exam with no skill testing required.

Apprenticeships
There are a lot of different career opportunities at Werner both on the road and in an office. Combine those skills with the myriad skills servicemembers develop during their time in service and there’s a lot of fitting opportunities for veterans.

We foster this potential through our apprenticeship programs for truck drivers, diesel mechanics and transportation managers. To learn more about these programs, click here.

Whether you are an active military member or a veteran, we thank you for your service.

If you’re a Veteran in crisis or concerned about one, there are caring, qualified VA responders standing by to help 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Veterans Crisis Line is a free, anonymous, confidential resource that’s available to anyone, even if you’re not registered with the VA or enrolled in VA health care.
